A family transformed by the power of the Lord

A family transformed by the power of the Lord

VALERIE'S TESTIMONY - A CROSS FOR THIS LAND

Life had always treated me pretty good, coming from an average family, I grew up the only daughter of the Biles family from Essex in England.

My childhood days after the end of the war were spent playing in cornfields and going to Sunday School at a little Baptist Mission chapel.

Although I had been christened in an Anglican church, it seemed that the Baptists were the only Christian group in the area that did anything for young children.

I have happy memories of singing ‘I am H A P P Y’ and ‘ A little talk with Jesus makes it quite alright’.

I would run home eagerly with Bible pictures bearing scripture verses which I would stick in the front and back covers of my Bible which was given to me by one of our neighbours.

I was a child who always thought a lot and I would spnd hours pondering things over and over in my minds, big things like life and death were always present.

I was always trying to find an explanations for the big things, but death always puzzled and frustrated me the most.

I could not explain it, what was dying like, did you feel lanything when your were in the grave, or was it like an endless sleep?

One days I heard that my closest friend had died – he name was Doris and although she was several years older, we had been inseparable friends.

The shock was very great, I did not shed one tear of grief, but buried my sorrow deep in my heart and though I found new friends, Doris’ loss increased my own fears about death.

At nights I would toss and turn as sleep evaded me and eventually it grew into a deep fear, not wishing to sleep for fear that I might die in my sleep.

My breathing would quicken and my mouth would become so dry, night after night I went through this living nightmare.

I would never express my feeling to my parents, this was something that I carried alone.

Then, as I grew into a young woman, these thoughts faded from memory and the fears were not quite so frequent as when I was young.

I left school and trained at a secretarial college and then took a job in a London insurance office.

I had started to ride horses when I was young and now my purpose in life was to own a show jumper of my own and it came true during the next three years.

I spent all my free time riding in horse shows and jumping competitions and also taught in a local riding school, and it was during this time – at the age of 18 – that I met Frank.

I can truly say that it was love at first sight, and within a few days we knew we were meant for each other.

Frank was doing his military services and we became engaged for two years, saving up to get married, and as his testimony relates our first few years were spent farming, horse breeding and raising our two beautiful daughters.

We are very proud of all three of our children.

As the years went by it seemed that Frank and I had more problems, maybe, it was because of our different backgrounds that we spent a lot of time arguing.

This eventually drove Frank out of the house to seek other company and he began to frequent the golf club where they was always someone to drink and talk with.

We had just moved to Norfolk after our successful years in farm and still had our horses, we bought a sailing yacht, and with a lovely new home everything look good for us.

But even the benefits of all these material possessions did not bring us happiness and peace of mind.

I grew lonelier and lonelier as night after night Frank would spend the evening out.

Our children were young, just seven and four years old, so they went to bed early and the nights seemed endless.

It was during this period that I started ‘thinking’ again, and once more those unanswered fears about death came back to haunt me, and I would begin to get feelings of panic and claustrophobia.

Beads of sweat ran down my face as once again I thought I might die, I could not sit still and I paced around the house, my whole body literally shaking with fear.

I thought about suicide as a way out of the nightmare but never had the nerve to do it.

One day the children started attending Sunday School meetings and again the refrains of ‘I am H A P P Y’ would flood my memory and there awoke a deep hope in my heart, although I didn’t understand it at the time.

Unknown to Frank and I, the children had given their hearts to the Lord and the change was evident in their radiance and joy as they played in the garden.

Such games as ‘Jesus and the devil’ were the highlight of their day, with Jesus always coming out the winner, of course.

This led to the eventual visitation of the local Baptist minister, the Rev Arthur Baxter, from Mundesley.

He offered to visit a few evenings a week to study the Bible and seemed a very kind man, although a little odd in his frayed collar and patched elbows.

Inwardly I though this strange but after we got to know him, we realised he was a man of real humility in his love for Jesus.

As we spent night after night studying God’s wor

Mission 6.1- Taking the Bridge

Mission 6.1- Taking the Bridge

Mission: 6.1

The CIS are invading the planet of Gand- that is all I bothered to read on my mission briefing. The 89th Legion were dropped onto the Separatist ship, the Gild XI, and told to take the bridge of the Planetary Defence Generator. My squad and I made it into the main corridor leading to the bridge before we encountered Separatist Droid Marines. 2 of my newest squad members took the ones by the door whilst Maz and I took down the Tactical droid and his guard on the lower levels. The Bridge is ours.

Name: Drummond Residence
Home of Don and Francie Drummond
Architect: David B. Runnells
Year Designed: Circa 1946
Builder: Don Drummond
Year Completed: Circa 1947 or 48
Size: Unknown
Location: Mission Hills KS
Type: Residential
Style: Modern
Status: Demolished
Photographer: Unknown

This is the only known image of the house that David Runnells designed for Modern Home Builder, Don Drummond's personal use. Don loaned me this 8x10 transparency film for me to scan. He told me that some photographers, possibly from House Beautiful, were in town to shoot another of his projects and they shot this one image on their lunch break while Francie made them a meal. Notice that almost all of the tables and chairs were by high end, classic-modern designer, T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings. The one notable exception is the coffee table by Isamu Noguchi. Don Drummond Jr. said that his mother made a special trip to New York to buy all of this furniture. Most of the furniture and the painting of seagulls were in the Drummond home when we visited him in California a few years ago. In fact, he sat in the white chair to the far left almost the entire time we were there. This image is one of my favorite finds in my quest to uncover the story about Don Drummond and David Runnells.

Bedroom - After Cure 2

Bedroom - After Cure 2

As you can see, I don't have a bedframe yet. I might not have the time to go to Montreal and pick it up before the end of the Cure, but I can tell you it's going to be a MALM bedframe, with the attached side tables in the oak veneer color. I will put a white rug underneath and Noguchi lamps on the side tables. I'll also add pillows and maybe change the color and texture of the bedspread. The only thing I still haven't figured out is the art I'll put over it.

Noguchi Table Finish: Noguchi Black

IN50E3 Finish: Noguchi Black Noguchi Table Pictured Here with Natural Cherry Base Designed by Isamu Noguchi ''Everything is sculpture,'' said Isamu Noguchi. ''Any material, any idea without hindrance born into space, I consider sculpture.'' Noguchi took materials such as stone, metal, wood, clay, bone, and paper and carved them into graceful, organic shapes. His Noguchi Table joins a curved, solid wood base with a freeform glass top. The ethereal result does not diminish the practical design: a sturdy and durable table. This balance of sculptural form and everyday function has made the Noguchi table an understated and beautiful element in homes and offices since its introduction in 1948. DESIGN STORY | FEATURES AT A GLANCE | DIMENSIONS | WHY BUY FROM US? Design Story: -Noguchi believed the sculptor's task was to shape space, to give it order and meaning, and that art should ''disappear,'' or be as one with its surroundings. -Unwilling and unable to be pigeonholed, Noguchi created sculptures that could be as abstract as Henri Moore's or as realistic as Leonardo's. He used any medium he could get his hands on: stone, metal, wood, clay, bone, paper, or a mixture of any or all--carving, casting, cutting, pounding, chiseling, or dynamiting away as each form took shape. -''To limit yourself to a particular style may make you an expert of that particular viewpoint or school, but I do not wish to belong to any school,'' he said. ''I am always learning, always discovering.'' -His relationship with Herman Miller came about when one of his designs was used to illustrate an article written by George Nelson called ''How to Make a Table.'' It became his famous ''coffee table,'' and it's as appealing today as it was then.
